Thinking Like Players: How Halo Infinite’s Bots Make Decisions
This was my first time speaking at GDC, and it was a real journey to try and figure out how to distill some of the hard work we did into a single talk. I’m pretty happy with the end result, and I learned a ton about the realities of giving a talk like this!
“You really feel like… you must be this paragon of excellence to even be an entry-level person, and that’s just not true.”
A roundtable discussion with some amazing women that goes all over the place, from getting started in your career to the state of the industry and how we can make it better. Also I had to break my template here because the little card thing was covering up people’s faces in the thumbnail and it very much annoyed me.

This was a profile piece for the 343 Industries website which talks about my work with the intern program, my management philosophy, and dabbles a bit with some of the other work I do. And I get to use a theatre metaphor!
“We spent a lot of time breaking down how humans play in internal playtests and prior Halo games,” Chin-Deyerle and Stern said. “We tried to figure out why people do what they do in multiplayer, and then how we could model those choices.”
This was one of the first external interviews we did about bots, hot off the heels of a successful debut of our bots in the first Halo Infinite multiplayer preview.
“Finding the right balance of all these variables and how to rank them all against each other is as much a problem of human psychology as it is an engineering one, which has made it super interesting to work on.”
This was our first detailed conversation about Bots in Halo Infinite, and I was so glad that we were able to bring in the whole Bots team to have a roundtable style-discussion about the work we’d all been doing (It’s near the bottom, this was a dense article!)
